About Me.
Hi, my name is Sofia, and I am a 17-year-old Italian student studying in my second year of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). I have a deep fascination for maths and physics and I am incredibly curious to understand how the world around me works. My passion for these subjects, blended with my love for creating, is what has inspired me to pursue engineering at university.
I strongly believe my passion for creating can be traced back to my summer vacations with my Grandfather in the Italian Alps. Each year, we would turn the backyard into our workshop and choose a project to undertake. The most memorable one is undoubtedly the miniature garage we built to host my little brother’s car collection. What made it really unique was the working lift: I attached a rope to the wooden platform, passed it through a pulley, and secured it to a spindle to control the motion. After completing the project, my grandfather and I would celebrate our work by savouring a Coté D’or Bouchée Milk Chocolate.
After completing the IBDP, my aim is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a particular focus on the fields of mechanical and aerospace engineering. After completing my bachelor’s degree I aspire to obtain a Master’s and Doctorate degree to deepen my expertise in engineering. My ultimate objective is to have a positive impact and make significant contributions to solving real-life problems.
Education
2013-2021
Istituto Marymount
For elementary and middle school I attended Istituto Marymount, a bilingual school in Rome. Here is where I first became interested in maths and the sciences. Thanks to the bilingual curriculum offered, I studied various subjects, ranging from biology to Shakespeare, in English, allowing me to become fluent. During middle school, I also had the opportunity to learn Spanish, improving my language skills.
2021-2023
Liceo Scientifico C. Cavour
For the first two years of high school I attended Liceo Scientifico C. Cavour, a public high school in the heart of Rome with a rigorous scientific curriculum. Specifically, I chose the Cambridge Physics course, which allowed me to take extra maths, physics and English classes. While fostering my passion for the sciences, the school provided me with a very well-rounded education, offering subjects such as Latin, history, literature, civic education and art history.
2023-2025
Haileybury College
For my final two years of high school I moved to Haileybury College, a boarding school just north of London, joining students from over 40 nations of the world. I chose the IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) to balance my enthusiasm for the sciences with a holistic education. For this reason I chose to pursue Maths AA, Physics and Biology as my Higher Level courses and Philosophy, Italian A Literature, and English Language and Literature as my Standard Level subjects. Studying for the IB has taught me how to write scientific papers and literary essays. Moreover, thanks to the core elements like CAS and Theory of Knowledge, I have devoted myself to volunteering and reflecting upon what we know.
